One of the main sources of eutrophication in the Baltic Sea is discharge of wastewater, which contains nutrients in the form of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P).

There is a vast patent literature relating to the removal of nutrients from wastewater. All is not included here, but we present a large selection. We have divided the inventions into three categories:

Industrial and municipal wastewater

Small-scale treatment of domestic sewage

Wastewater from ships

There is of course an overlap between these categories, since many treatment technologies can be applied to various kinds of wastewater.
