Fishing has been important to the people around the Baltic Sea for a very long time. Especially sprat, herring and cod are important; they make up about 90 % of the total fish catch in the Baltic. The populations of commercially important fish species are declining both due to changes of the environment and to heavy fishing.

In this section we have included a technology that can help keeping the fishing at a sustainable level, namely bycatch reduction.
